The Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation of Catalonia continues the institution that was founded in 1840 by the Barcelona Bar Association. It is a public law corporation with an independent legal personality. Its predecessor dates back to 1777. It was founded in 1840 and restored in 1954 after a long period or suppression (between 1939 and 1954) after the Spanish civil war. It is recognized as Corporation of Public Law by Decree 2009/1966, and has been entered in the Register of Academies of the Government of Catalonia by Resolution on June 8th, 1988.
Its headquarters is the Barcelona Bar Association.
Its objectives are the study and research of law, the cooperation in legislation reform, and the promotion of legal culture.
The Academy´s instruments are: the study, discussion, and debate of doctrinal legal issues in private and public meetings; the collaboration in scientific work of other legal institutions; the study of legal provisions to guide its implementation and reform proposal; the preparation of reports and opinions on legal issues; conference organization; convene tenders to reward legal studies papers; the creation of chairs and conference organization, and the publication of work achieved or promoted by the Academy itself.
The permanent members are selected among Doctorates or Graduates in law who are distinguished either by research, study or practice of law and are based in Catalonia. They are proposed by three academics. During the reception ceremony the elected academic is given a metal of the Academy and a diploma.
Honorary members may be Spanish or non-Spanish nationals that the Academy elects based on their outstanding merits or remarkable collaboration provided to the Academy.
Election of a new member is done in an ordinary session, within three months following the declaration of a vacancy. The chosen elected member is then notified and must accept the nomination in writing. The membership is received after reading the acceptance speech at a public meeting of the Academy. Meanwhile, the elected member attends all acts of the Association, but has no voting rights. The admission speeches to the Academy are a valuable legal collection of the highest level. The most recent acceptance speech are available on the website.
